What the preservative does.
Benzyl alcohol works by disrupting bacterial cell membranes, which stops new bacterial growth without reacting with most reconstituted compounds. That's the practical difference from plain sterile water: sterile water is intended for a single draw, while the preservative here is what allows repeated, sterile access to the same vial over its labeled use period.
